VEREMANS, Renaat

VEREMANS, Renaat Renaat VEREMANS (Lier, 2nd March 1894 - Antwerp, 5th June 1969) first studied solfeggio and piano with his father and then continued his studies at the Lemmens Institute of Malines where, in 1914 he received prizes for organ and piano. He finished his music studies at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Antwerp. For a while, he was a private pupil of Edward Verheyden for counterpoint, fugue and composition.

He persued a successful career as organist, pedagogue, conductor and composer. For a long time he was organist at the Saint Pauls Church of Antwerp. From 1921 to 1941 he was conductor at the Royal Flemish Opera of Antwerp. From 1928 to 1959 he taught solfeggio at the Conservatory of Antwerp.

As a composer, he became immediately famous in Flanders with the prize winning patriotic song “Vlaanderen” which he wrote in 1910.

His extraordinary talent and feeling for melody combined with solid knowledge and usage of traditionnel harmony made him a popular composer. He wrote numerous cantatas, several operas and operettas, also music for film and theater. His orchestral and instrumental music tends towards romantic lyricism.
