SOURIS, André

André SOURIS (Marchienne-au-Pont, 10th July 1899 - Paris, 12th February 1970) persued complete music studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He also took lessons with Paulin Marchand and Paul Gilson. After receiving the Prize Rubens he travelled to Italy and Paris, stayed at the “Abbaye de Solesmes” and later went to Salzburg.

He deployed the activities of composer, conductor, pedagogue, musicologist and poet.

From 1937 to 1946 he was conductor of the Belgian Radio Orchestra; from 1944 to 1948, director of the music studio of the “Séminaire des Arts” in Brussels; from 1946 to 1956, chairman of the Belgian section of the I.S.C.M. (International Society of Conteporary Music) and finally, from 1949 to 1964, professor of harmony at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.

He was very active in the surrealistic movement and with his curious and penetrating mind inspired a whole generation to search for and discover new ideas in music. Despite his numerous activities he was a prolific composer. His style was influenced first by Debussy then by Stravinsky. Later he was tempted by serial music.

As a musicologist, he completed several manuscripts of Elisabethan music and developed an exhaustive method for the transcription of lute tablatures.
