ROLAND, Claude-Robert Claude-Robert ROLAND (Pont-de-Loup (Hainaut), 19th December 1935)

After his classical education he studied music at the conservatories of Mons, Liège, Paris and Brussels.

Attracted to contemporary music and the avant-garde, he took courses in conducting at Gravesano with Herman Scherchen, worked in Darmstadt with Pierre Boulez, György Ligeti and Bruno Maderna and studied in Paris with Marie-Madeleine Petit Antoine Geoffroy-Dechaumes.

He was organist in several Belgian cities. Since 1966 he has been director of the Music Academy of Montignies-le-Tilleul and since 1972 professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. As founder of the music circle “Musique vivante” he has promoted number of young contemporary performing artists and composers.

He has a vast musical culture and persues a career as composer, organist, musicologist and conductor. As a composer he is mostly self-taught. Many of his works are written in a rather free dodecaphonic style.
