LEKEU, Guillaume
Guillaume LEKEU (Heusy, 20th January 1870 - Angers, 21st January 1894)
Guillaume Lekeu received his general education in Poitiers until he moved with his parents to Paris. There he started serious music studies with Gaston Vallin, he took also lessons in counterpoint with César Franck. After the death of Franck in 1890 he became a disciple of Vincent d’Indy.
In Brussels he won in 1891 the second Grand Prize of Rome with his cantata “Andromède”. Back in Paris he started to compose almost without interruption until his premature death in 1894. He produced several outstanding works, amongst others his Violin Sonata which was dedicated to Eugène Ysaye who made this work world-famous through his excellent and countless performances. During his short career he wrote orchestral works, chamber music, religious music, choir music and songs.
As a composer, he is decidedly influenced by César Franck but through his modern harmonic conceptions and the vehemence of his musical language, he would perhaps have surpassed the limitations by the Franckist doctrine.
