DECADT, Jan
Jan DECADT (Ieper, 21st June 1914 - Harelbeke, 5th June 1995) studied counterpoint and fugue at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent. Afterwards he studied composition with Jean Absil.
In 1945 he founded the Academy of Music of Harelbeke and became its director. Under his guidance this institution developed into one of the leading academies of the country. Next to his pedagogic activities, he devotes much time to a large number of cultural and artistic societies. Because of this he took rather late to composition. In 1962 he received the Koopal Prize for his symphonic work.
Influenced by Béla Bartók, Paul Hindemith and Arthur Honegger his musical style developed from a lyrical language to a more agressive and sharper expression. He was tempted by the dodecaphony but moved towards free tonality.
